Tell Senator Durbin to Pass Prison Reform
Our nation’s criminal justice system faces a huge recidivism problem with over 75 percent of former inmates reoffending within the first five years. Fortunately, the Senate has an important opportunity to approve the House passed, bipartisan S. 2795 – the FIRST STEP Act. This bill would employ an evidence-based approach that would improve programming in prisons to better equip inmates for a brighter future.
I urge you to work with lawmakers in good faith to advance S. 2795 as it currently stands. While there is much more work to be done and this bill is not a silver bullet, it is an important step forward that would represent one of the most impactful updates to our criminal justice system in decades. Please, take this once-in-a-generation opportunity to advance this needed reform.
